Repovesi national parkUPM promoted the creation of Repovesi National Park in 2002 through a donation of 560 hectares of land to the state of Finland which enabled the establishment of the national park. At the same time the company also applied to voluntarily protect a further 1,400 hectares in the surrounding area which will remain under the company's ownership.
Repovesi is a unique area in southern Finland because of its natural condition and the fact that such an extensive area has remained undeveloped. Repovesi is a wilderness comprised of rugged terrain and diverse forests, bogs, cliffs and lakes. The red-throated diver Gavia stellata above is the symbolic bird of Repovesi's wilderness lakes. Repovesi national park consists mainly of forests that have been in commercial use. In 2004, an inventory of polypore species was carried out. It resulted in identifying 87 different species, including five threatened species and one that had not been found in Finland before.
The national park and company owned forests are administered by Metsähallitus as one unit. UPM participates in this process as a member of the administrative board. |
