Forest protection

UPM has surveyed all its forest lands and has identified and protected the valuable habitats found there. These valuable habitats have been mapped and are recorded in a database so that staff working in the forest knows where they are and consider them in their work.

UPM also monitors the origin of the wood it receives and the company's Forestry and Wood Sourcing Guidelines clearly state that:

"UPM does not source wood from protected areas where harvesting is prohibited by the authorities."

Modern harvesting practices and the expert knowledge of our staff means that wood can sometimes be harvested in protection areas as long as the conservation values of the area in question are maintained. UPM accepts wood from these sources when the operations are carried out in accordance with the permission and guidelines of the authorities.
