UPM Tracing Wood Imports
Tracing imports from RussiaIn 1996, UPM became the first forestry company to start developing an information system for tracing the origin of wood imported from Russia. UPM's award winning system consists of three main elements:
While the system was originally created for Russian imports, continuous development means the system is now used to track wood from the Baltic States aswell. In 2004, UPM carried out audits on 145 felling sites in Russia and 10 in Estonia. Two major and 29 minor non-conformities were identified. Corrective actions have already been taken. Based on the audit results UPM reserves the right to terminate deliveries. UN award winning projectIn the autumn 2000, UPM and its German customers Otto Versand and Axel Springer launched a project to increase transparency in the paper chain from tree to a magazine. The main idea was to develop an internet application which demonstrated how UPM tracks the wood delivered to its mills from Russia. The project was carried out with contributions from Greenpeace Russia, the Russian State Forest Administration and the independent auditor Det Norske Veritas.
