Legal loggingUPM operates according to the principles of sustainable forest management and has a policy commitment to observing the legislation and statutory regulations of each country where it operates. The company has also developed the following tools to ensure that its logging operations are legal: The ISO and EMAS certified management systems play a key role in ensuring absolute legitimacy of operations because they are regularly audited by an independent third party.
UPM considers legal logging in three parts; legal sourcing, legal harvesting and legal processing. It should, however, be noted that problems of illegal logging often reflect wider problems in society and are not the cause of the forest industry. Matters of law are the responsibility of the authorities and judiciary and UPM provides support through its expert knowledge and experience. WWF and WBCSD pilot projectUPM recently participated in a project between WWF Latvia and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development which looked at developing best wood tracking practices in order to verify legality of wood origin in Latvia.
