Origin of wood

Knowing the origin of wood allows UPM to be sure that its sources are sustainable and legal. It also allows UPM to verify that its suppliers are operating responsibly and are complying with the company's policies and guidelines e.g. wood is not accepted from protected forest areas.

UPM also requires information from its suppliers relating to plantations, genetically modified trees, conflict areas, radioactivity, CITES species and cultural and religious values in local communities where the wood has come from.

UPM knows the origin of wood

UPM knows the origin of the wood it buys and has had tracing systems in place for many years already. These systems are based on chain of custody and are integrated into third party certified ISO 9002, ISO 14001 and EMAS management systems. These systems fully control the origin of own harvesting and ensure other sources are controlled by contract terms of agreement and supplier checks.

In 2006, UPM bought almost 35 million m³ of wood, the majority of which came from private forests.

UPM has also developed a special tracing system for imported wood from Russia and the Baltic countries which requires that all deliveries must be accompanied by statement of origin showing a map grid reference for the location of the logging area.
