Birds as bioindicators of biodiversity

UPM has started a cooperation project with University of Moncton and Time Inc using bird species as indicators of biodiversity in managed forests. The aim is to measure bird responses to different forest management treatments in order to help develop harvest plans and logging methods compatible with the conservation of healthy populations.

The project is unique in that it combines extensive bird surveys and intensive monitoring of the nests of several bird species. The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the species to be monitored. This woodpecker nests in large dead or dying trees and it forages in dead wood such as snags, stumps and standing or fallen dead trees.

The project will be carried out over a three year period and the summary results will be published on these pages.
