The Catamaran Brook Watershed ProjectIn Canada, UPM is participating in the Catamaran Brook Watershed Project which involves the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans as well as several universities and local salmon conservation associations. The project began in 1989 and has been studying the impact of forestry on aquatic habitat and populations and, in particular, on the Atlantic salmon.
UPM has committed the entire Catamaran watershed (4,800 hectares) to facilitate this project and assists with road maintenance to the research facility, provision of structures for accommodation and research and technical expertise on the forestry side. No forest operations were conducted in the area during the first five years so that researchers could assess the brook in its "natural" state. This data was used as a control to compare with future measurements. After 5 years of no activity, forest operations commenced in accordance with forest management plans. The project has attracted significant international attention from the scientific research community. To date, 70 publications and 26 theses have been published resulting from research conducted at Catamaran Brook. |
