Valuable habitat survey in company forests

During 1997- 2002, UPM completed a five-year program to survey all valuable habitats in company owned forests in Finland. The project is a part of UPM's biodiversity programme. The survey included all items in the Forest Act and the other key biotopes mentioned in the Nature Conservation Act that came into force in Finland 1997. There are also many other valuable sites which are not protected by law, but have now been voluntarily protected by the company's own decision.

Altogether over 21,000 valuable sites were identified during the survey. 12,000 of these are protected by company decision and over 9,000 by the law. The most common protected biotopes are sparsely treed mires, brooks, cliffs, small lakes, springs, groves, herb-rich swamp wood forests, islets and alluvial forests. The largest and the most valuable forest and mire areas have been included in national conservation programs.
