Global biodiversity program

UPM has developed a global biodiversity programme for company forests in four countries: Finland, the UK, Canada and the United States. The programme aims to maintain and increase biodiversity in forests as well as promote best practices in sustainable forestry.

6 key elements

The programme identifies six key elements important for forest biodiversity:

Native tree species

Forest structure

Deadwood

Water resources

Valuable habitats

Natural forest

Global targets

UPM has set global targets for each key element that will be implemented through country level targets and local action plans.

  1. Maintain and increase proportion of native tree species and their natural composition.
  2. Manage deadwood quality and quantity to enhance biodiversity.
  3. Protect valuable habitats and manage them for their biodiversity value.
  4. Manage variation in forest structure at landscape and stand level.
  5. Maintain open water bodies and wetlands.
  6. Implement plan for remnants of natural forests.

The first period of the programme starting in 2007 lasts five years and includes biodiversity training for staff, implementation of the country level targets and action plan, the development of monitoring systems and the advancement of biodiversity research through specific projects.
