UPM Chain of Custody

UPM aims at increasing the use of certified fibre in all its mills and has developed a generic chain of custody model. The model meets the requirements of FSC and PEFC and confirms the sustainable and legal origin of all wood fibre used by the company.

The need for a generic model

There are more than 50 different forest certification standards worldwide and only two internationally recognised chain of custody systems: PEFC and FSC. UPM is receiving wood and fibre material which is certified under both of these schemes. A lack of mutual recognition has caused problems for customers in deciding which chain of custody to choose and in setting targets for the share of certified wood. UPM's model reports the total percentage of certified fibre in our products and the percentage according to different schemes.

UPM's generic chain of custody model covers management systems, origin of wood, raw material categories, certified content and documentation.

Risk assessment

For non-certified sources, UPM staff carries out a risk assessment to ensure that wood is supplied according to UPM's Forestry and Wood Sourcing Guidelines. This ensures that the wood delivered to UPM's mills is not illegally sourced, from protected forests notified by the authorities to be excluded from harvesting, CITES species, genetically modified trees, from areas converted from natural forest to plantations or harvested in violation of traditional or civil rights.

The results of the risk assessment are publicly available on request from UPM's regional forest departments.
