Parallel test

During 2004 a parallel field test of seven forest certification standards was carried out in forests managed by UPM in Canada, Finland and the UK. The field test covered 35,000 hectares of forests and selected key subject areas that would be most significant in their impacts and hence would best illustrate the differences between the standards.

Main results of the test:

Five standards (FFCS, FSC Draft Finland, FSC Sweden, SFI, and UKWAS) achieved a balanced approach promoting the economic, social and environmental management of forests but with slight differences in emphasis.

The differences in the standards reflect the local conditions and the values of the stakeholders who have been involved in standard setting processes.

UKWAS meets the requirements of both FSC and PEFC, proving that the harmonisation of standards at a national level is possible.

This is the first time an international ENGO and global forest industry company worked together with both FSC and PEFC standards.
