UPM promotes forest certification

UPM promotes a global increase in the use of certified wood and supports different credible forest certification schemes. All of UPM's own forests are certified and the company is committed to several national and international certification standards. The selection of the standard applied is based on local conditions and is individually decided upon by the stakeholders in each country.

Forest certification is made up of three main parts:

Forest certificate:
Independent third party verification of the quality of forest management in relation to the criteria of a sustainable forest management standard

Chain of custody:
An unbroken trail of accountability that confirms how much wood fibre is from a certified sustainable source

Logo:
A tool to communicate the sustainability of timber, paper and wood-based products to customers

There are two international forest certification schemes and more than 50 different standards. However less than 6% of all forests are certified, though it is estimated by WWF that this rises to 30% in commercially managed forests. 95% of these certified forests are in the northern hemisphere and more focus needs to go into promoting good forest practises and forest certification in other parts of the world.

UPM promotes harmonious development between the different schemes.
