Sustainability in UPM's own forests

UPM owns one million hectares of forestry land in Canada, Finland, the UK and the USA. All of UPM's forest areas have a management plan based on the principles of sustainability. These plans are often prepared in association with a wide range of stakeholders and are available to the public.

In addition, UPM is responsible for the management of 953,000 hectares of provincially owned forest in Canada, 260,000 hectares of privately owned forest in Finland and 167,000 hectares of privately owned plantations in the UK. UPM also has 185,000 hectares of leased forests in Russia.

An interesting and challenging task

UPM's forest managers have an interesting and challenging task ensuring the company's own forests are managed in an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable way. The task requires the company's staff, contractors and suppliers to be well trained and have a strong knowledge in a range of disciplines:
  • Forest management planning
  • Harvesting and transport
  • Timber marketing
  • Silviculture
  • Soil and Water protection
  • Biodiversity
  • Landscape management
  • Pests and diseases
  • Wildlife control
  • Cultural heritage
  • Archaeology
  • Training and education
  • Taking care of these aspects and many more helps to create long term economic, environmental and social benefits for society, particularly in communities who rely on the forest for their livelihood.
