Sustainable forestry

UPM is committed to forest management and forest harvesting practices based on the internationally accepted principles of sustainable forest management. The UNCED Rio Declaration of 1992 stated that:

"Forest resources and forest lands should be sustainably managed to meet the social, economic, ecological, cultural and spiritual needs of present and future generations"

As a major wood user and one of the world's largest forest owners and managers, UPM takes the responsibility for meeting this challenge seriously. UPM also requires that its external suppliers operate according to the principles of sustainable development and monitors performance through regular supplier checks.

Legal and sustainable wood sourcing

UPM procures its raw material mainly from the boreal and temperate semi-natural managed forests of Finland, Russia, the Baltic States, Central Europe and North America. Wood for UPM's pulp suppliers also comes from plantation forests in different parts of the world.

UPM has developed several tools which ensure that the wood supplied comes from legal and sustainable sources.
